Lake Placid, New York - Though most commonly known as the home of the 'Miracle on Ice' in the 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid's role in shaping American history widely pre-dates its second Olympic Games. In the 1840s, property owners in Lake Placid granted large tracts of lands to former slaves, reforming land law and reflecting support for the Abolitionist movement.
